About
Imane Bassalas-Doté is an emerging artist working in Liverpool.
Although she has no formal art training, her work has the presence and confidence of a more established artist. It is bold and direct, lacking the hesitancy sometimes apparent in newer output.
Imane’s current practice draws on a number of key influences. Most immediately, the precise drafting and familiar shapes of the built environment that characterise interior design and architecture are all evident in the large-scale canvases that make up much of her recent work.
Overall, though, Imane’s paintings defy easy categorisation or simplistic influence attribution, situating themselves instead in more nuanced territory, most particularly the tension between conventionally opposing forces. So, while abstraction is undoubtedly the dominant medium, some figuration and symbolism are allowed to echo through.
Similarly, in spite of the strong sense of order and control in the work’s linear construction, a vibrant colour palette hints at something altogether more free.
